Lifestyle and Daily Activities:
Finding the Right Fit

When considering cataract surgery or lens replacement, it’s essential to discuss your lifestyle, daily activities, and specific visual requirements. Each lens option has its pros and cons, which may significantly impact your quality of life.

For instance, some lenses offer excellent distance vision but may limit near vision, while others provide a full range but might not be suitable for all activities. During the consultation, I will help you weigh these factors to determine which solution aligns best with your needs. Together, we’ll ensure that your vision enhancement complements your lifestyle and daily pursuits.

Types of Replacement Lenses: Premium Cataract Surgery

Replacing the lens in the eye to treat cataract is something we have been doing as eye surgeons for many years now – in fact it is one of the most successful and safest operation that we do as surgeons.

There are many new types of replacement lenses that can be fitted after the removal of the old cloudy lens. Although there are very many different types of lens available they basically break down into two types:

1. Lenses that have a fixed focal point (BASIC IOL)

2. Lenses that allow you to see clearly over a range of distances (PREMIUM IOLs)

Fixed Focal Point Lenses (Basic IOLs)

Using lenses with a fixed focal point means that after your cataracts have been treated you are still quite likely to need to wear glasses if you used to wear them before your surgery. By carefully choosing the “strength” of the lens I may well be able to reduce the “strength” of glasses you need, but it is likely you will still need glasses nevertheless.

Exciting new developments in lens technology now mean that it is possible to replace your cataracts with new lenses that can mean that you no longer need to wear glasses at all. This is obviously something that people find very attractive as it saves on the cost of new glasses, means that you can see clearly when you get up in the morning or at night, and never have problems with spectacles getting steamy or covered in raindrops during bad weather.

Premium IOLs

There are very many types of these new lenses available and if you want to go down this route I will discuss the pros and cons of each option with you during our consultation. These lenses are not suitable for everybody, but most people who choose them are delighted with the results of surgery.

Unfortunately, in the NHS as surgeons we are only able to fit the basic “fixed” focal length type of lens, even if people would benefit from having the newer lens type. This is because the NHS will only fund certain lens types.

Privately there are no such restrictions and I can recommend and fit the lens that is best suited to your lifestyle and preferences with no problems at all. Increasing numbers of people are opting for the freedom that these new lenses can give them.

Costs of Premium IOLs

Yes, there is a one-off cost involved as you will have to get them done privately (usually around £3500 per eye depending on the lens implant). However, you only have two eyes, and you have a once in a lifetime opportunity to get a better visual outcome than a basic fixed focus IOL. You will be seeing through your lens implants all day, every day for the rest of your life, unlike spending the same amount on a holiday, a new kitchen or a car!

MULTIFOCAL (TRIFOCAL) IOL – ALCON PANOPTIX

The Alcon PanOptix Intraocular Lens (IOL), a premium trifocal lens designed to enhance vision after cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange offering clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances, reducing the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Manufactured in the USA by Alcon, the world leader in IOL technology, PanOptix® is the most implanted trifocal IOL in the world. With over 2.2 million implants, PanOptix® is the most-implanted trifocal IOL worldwide and delivers an exceptional high-quality visual experience from far to near.

What is the Alcon PanOptix IOL? The Alcon PanOptix IOL is a trifocal intraocular lens that replaces the natural lens of the eye. It is designed to provide high-quality vision at all distances—near, intermediate, and far—making it ideal for a range of daily activities like reading, working on a computer, and driving.

Unlike traditional monofocal lenses, which only focus on one distance (usually far), the PanOptix lens offers the ability to see clearly across a range of distances without relying on glasses.

Who is the PanOptix IOL For? PanOptix IOL is suitable for individuals:

  • Undergoing cataract surgery or seeking refractive lens replacement

  • Desiring to improve vision at multiple distances

  • Wanting to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses

  • Leading an active lifestyle, where both near and distance vision are important (e.g., reading, working on a computer, driving)

  • Who do not have significant underlying eye conditions such as severe dry eye or macular degeneration

Your surgeon will assess your eye health and lifestyle needs to determine if the PanOptix IOL is the right choice for you.

Benefits of the PanOptix IOL

  • Clear Vision at All Distances: PanOptix provides excellent near, intermediate, and distance vision, reducing the need for glasses for most daily activities.

  • Enhanced Near Vision: Ideal for reading, using a smartphone, or engaging in close-up tasks without the need for reading glasses.

  • Intermediate Vision: Clearer vision at arm’s length, perfect for using computers, cooking, or other mid-range activities.

  • Far Vision: Provides sharp distance vision, beneficial for activities like driving or watching TV.

  • Reduced Dependence on Glasses: Many patients no longer need glasses or only require them occasionally after receiving the PanOptix lens.

  • Low Light Vision: The lens is designed to provide high-quality vision even in low light, such as at dusk or when reading in dim lighting.

Potential Risks and Side Effects As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks associated with the implantation of the PanOptix IOL:

  • Glare and Halos: Some patients may experience glare, halos, or rings around lights, especially when driving at night. These effects usually diminish over time.

  • Contrast Sensitivity: Some patients might notice a slight reduction in contrast sensitivity, making it harder to differentiate between light and dark objects in low light conditions.

  • Surgical Risks: As with any surgery, there is a small risk of infection, bleeding, or inflammation, but these are rare and generally treatable.

  • Other Visual Disturbances: Some patients may experience visual phenomena such as starbursts around bright lights.

It’s important to discuss any concerns with your surgeon before surgery, as they can help evaluate your specific risk factors.

What to Expect During Surgery

  1. Pre-surgery Evaluation: Your eye surgeon will assess your eye health, review your vision goals, and determine if the PanOptix IOL is right for you.

  2. The Procedure: Cataract or lens replacement surgery is generally quick (15-30 minutes). The surgeon will remove your natural lens and replace it with the PanOptix IOL. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and most patients experience little to no discomfort.

  3. Recovery: Recovery is typically smooth, with most patients resuming normal activities within a few days. Vision will gradually improve over the following weeks.

Aftercare

  • Follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding post-operative care, including the use of prescribed eye drops to prevent infection and manage inflammation.

  • Avoid rubbing your eyes, heavy lifting, and strenuous activities during the first few weeks of recovery.

  • Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing and monitor the success of the IOL.

  • Q. When Can I Drive After Cataract Surgery?
    A. The law requires you to be able to see the number plate at 20.5m with both eyes together. If you reach this standard and you feel confident to drive, you can do so within a week of surgery.
  • Q. Does Cataract Surgery Hurt?
    A. There will be little or no discomfort during the procedure. While you will be awake during the procedure, steps will be taken to ensure that you don’t feel any pain. Numbing eye drops are used in the eye to prevent discomfort. After medications wear off after surgery, you may find some minor eye discomfort. If you experience any pain after surgery, it is usually very mild, and you can manage it with over-the-counter pain medication.
  • Q. How Long Does It Take To Recover From Cataract Surgery?
    A. The recovery time from cataract surgery is short. Any discomfort or soreness you feel should disappear within a few days. Depending on the size and nature of your cataracts and your ability to heal, full recovery should take about four to six weeks. During this time, you want to be sure to follow all the after-surgery instructions.
  • Q. When Is The Right Time To Have Cataract Surgery?
    A. If you have vision problems and cataracts, then surgery might be the right time. It’s possible you may experience vision problems, such as halos or glare, before your optician notices any significant clouding of the lens. This can be reason enough to consider cataract surgery if you need better visual acuity. The general advice is to wait till you feel the symptoms are affecting your day to day life, or if you feel you are not able to see as well as you could before.
  • Q. When Can I Exercise After Cataract Surgery?
    A. Avoid strenuous exercise in the first 2-4 weeks after surgery. You can go for walks, but avoid running/ jogging for 4 weeks. Avoid lifting heavy weights for 4 weeks.
  • Q. When Can I Swim After Cataract Surgery?
    A. Avoid swimming for 4-6 weeks after surgery.
  • Q. When Can I Play Golf?
    A. If you take it easy, you can start playing golf a week after surgery.
Conclusion

The Alcon PanOptix IOL is an excellent choice for patients seeking a full range of vision correction after cataract surgery. By offering clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances, the PanOptix lens can greatly reduce your need for glasses, allowing you to enjoy a more active and independent lifestyle.
